Gumbie at the Dew AST stop in Portland, OR

So, our boy, Gumbie (Mathieu Therres, Baltimore, MD), placed 14th in the Dew Tour semifinals in Portland, OR last weekend. Dang! Barely knocked out of the top twelve skaters who move on to the finals. Maybe we are biased, but the judges must have blinked or something during Gumbie’s run. Yeah, that’s what happened, ya see…maybe during a quick-fix by Gretchen’s touch-up hair crew some overpriced hairspray got carried by the jetstream from Sheckler’s entourage up to the judging booth above and the judges’ eyes were momentarily rendered blind just as Gumbie was killin it on the course? Sounds possible. Either way, we are certain that Gumbie accomplished what he truly wanted to – that is, have fun skating. (Oh, and representing Shmack, of course!)

For more goo on the Dew, check out Rowe’s words of wisdom at InterstateMag.com – the skater site. (And when you’ve had your fill of that juicy goodness, hit up InterstateNation.com – the Universal Skateboarder Network!!)

10 REASONS WHY SKATEBOARDING DIDN'T MAKE 2008 OLYMPICS

1. JACKASS GUYS ARE BUSY THOSE 2 WEEKS

2. SKATERS BLAMED FOR VAN BLOWING UP DURING OPENING FIREWORKS SHOW

3. VERT AND STREET COURSE CONSTRUCTED OVER & AROUND THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA (THANKS A LOT DANNY)

4. DRUG TESTING

5. SKATERS WOULD TRY TO GRIND METALS WON

6. INCREASED SECURITY BUDGET EXPENSE FOR WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM

7. OLYMPICS HOST INSISTS ON USING INFERIOR BOARDS MANUFACTURED IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY

8. SHECKLER FEELING SAD THESE DAYS AND JUST NOT UP TO IT

9. TORCH CEREMONY GROSSLY MISUNDERSTOOD. SMOKE & DRINKING NOT ALLOWED ON PREMISES!

10. MICHAEL PHELPS PROTESTS WATER CONDITIONS AFTER
MYSTERIOUS NIGHTLY POOL DRAININGS

11. ZOO YORK, GIRL, AND ANTI HERO RIDERS CAN'T AGREE ON
A UNIFORM

12. BUSH NOT A FAN. FELL OFF SKATEBOARD AT AGE 11, HIT
HEAD AND NEVER QUITE FULLY RECOVERED

Damn that's 12. All in fun and pun, we're not really this bad, are we? This digression isn't all on me,

I had a little help from my bros Jose, Brad P and S. Fauser. Thanks guys!

Shmack Skate Team Update!

Julian Etheridge, Jed Shooter, and Matt Therres all converged in Baltimore last month for the Dew AST. Unfortunately, Julian and Jed did not make the seven-man cut (out of over 30 skaters) for the prelims the next day, but both skated well and represented Shmack with pride and style as always. Congratulations to Matt Therres, who was prequalified into the prelims, for making the final twelve skaters who moved into the final competition. You can check out photos and footage of the event at www.ast.com!

Jay Bertsch was in NYC last weekend tearing up the streets! (Probably skitchin on the back of some yellow taxi cabs.) Jay has been working hard promoting Shmack in and around Philly. Stay tuned for upcoming photos…

Mark Paluska, Glenn Newland, and Lloyd Vines continue to haunt the hangouts in Hampton Roads. Word on the street is that Julian plans to round them all up for some group footy. Shhhhh – it’s a secret.

Trevor Colden held it down at the Mid-Atlantic Skate Series (MASS) competitions. Check out the results at www.curtkimbel.com!

Jaimel Bryant took a trip out west to check out the Maloof Money Cup. As soon as he gets off his board and in his car, we expect to receive that brand new footage he keeps telling us about. Hey Jaimel!! Get on it, son!! Bring us the footy or we’ll have to take it by force!

Speaking of “Force”…both Lloyd and Julian are featured in the graphics on the front of one of the sick-ass T-shirts from Shmack’s new Fall line. Perhaps coincidentally, the name of that shirt happens to be The Force. Pick it up at your local Shmack retailer or visit the website at www.shmackclothing.com.

Mathieu “Gumbie” Therres will be in Portland, OR this upcoming weekend for the third stop of the Dew AST. We expect feats of skating greatness. Best wishes to ya, Gumbie. Tear it up and make Shmack proud. Live action hosted on NBC!!

"Blow Stuff Up"?? Um, OK.

Random skateboarding blog on about.com by Steve. (Who is Steve?)

(courtesy of the Skateboarding Wire)

It's the 4th of July, the day we Americans celebrate our independence, and enjoy blowing stuff up! For the rest of the world, this might just be an normal day, but there's no reason you can't blow some stuff up too! In fact, the Mystic Sk8 Cup, the best skateboarding competition in Europe, starts today. If you live someplace in Europe, you should go to Prague and see it!

For those of you in the Americas, or Africa, Asia, Australia, or even Antarctica, going to Prague might not be something you can pull off in an afternoon. So, I would welcome you in the fine American tradition of exploding something, throwing a party, and enjoying your freedoms. Even if you live in a country that has less freedom than the USA, you still have plenty of freedoms to celebrate. And if you are reading this, I'm guessing that skateboarding is one of them - so grab your board, get out there and enjoy being alive! Go Skateboarding Day might have passed, but that's no less a reason to ride your board, to throw a party, or just to enjoy the freedom to skate.

Ju-Tang on the Fleezers' website!!

Check out some footy of Julian "Ju-Tang" Etheridge on the VA Fleezers website.

Julian headed down to Florida with Fleezers' originator/genius/filmer-extraordinaire, Justin "Whitey" White, in late April. Not entirely sure about this (somebody do the research for me, would ya?), but I believe some of the footage is from Florida; some was filmed at the concrete park in Currituck, NC.

Anyway, it's SICK!!!

You can check out more of Whitey's stuff here in a short montage-style film called "Dead End" that was edited by local 757 skater, Chris Ridgeway, and produced by PEER Pressure Productions in association with 700 HPD studios. This collection of shorties (not as in "chicks"!) features many local skaters and filmers from the 757 - in fact, Shmack Skate Team skaters Julian, Lloyd Vines, and Glenn Newland are speckled throughout. Opinions may differ as far as the film in it's entirety (about 36 mins), but the skating is a true-to-life rendition of what this flatground, below-sea-level city we love has to offer. When the landscape is limited, it leads to creativity!

While searching for interesting things on the virtual highway, we stumbled across this photo of Jed Shooter in the "Most Viewed Photos" section on the Skate Perception website. If you haven't joined this forum yet, better hurry before the honeys find out....else you're just plain lame.

Mad props to photographer, Steve LaClair!

RockStar Bearings and The Shelter Skatepark team up on July 19!

Just so you know...Shmack Skate Team manager, Julian "Ju-Tang" Etheridge, and Dustin Charlton (of RockStar) go way back....as in, waaaayyyyy back!

So, if you feel the need to be in NY on the 19th, check out this event. Rod Campbell is worth the price of admission alone! Wait, it's free. Rob rips for sure, though.
